Transportation

North Dakota’s Midwestern location and proximity to the Canada make it easily accessible by many modes of transportation. Major interstate highways cross the state, including I-29 running north to south from Canada to South Dakota, and I-94, running east to west from Minnesota to Montana.

Geography & Climate

North Dakota is located in the Midwestern and Western regions of the United States, geographically in the continent’s center, and ranks as the 19th largest state in total area by covering 70,704 square miles. North Dakota is bordered to the north by the country Canada, to the south by South Dakota, to the east by Minnesota, and to the west by Montana.

History

The land now known as North Dakota was once home principally to the Mandan tribe of Native Americans, and included the Arikara and Hidatsa peoples. Additional tribes who ventured into the region included nomadic tribes such as the Sioux (also known as the Dakota or Lakota nation), Cheyenne, Cree, and Crow, Ojibwa, and Assiniboin peoples.
